Challenge and a half

Jan McDermott has passed the halfway point in her year long Marathon a Month campaign running for the Alzheimers Society and Birkenhead’s Welcome Centre. Another six races in October, and a trophy, bring Jan’s total races completed to 36 and over 180 competitive miles run in aid of these two charities.

Jan is raising money for The Alzheimer’s Society in memory of her Mum and to fund research into the cause, care, cure and prevention of all types of dementia. In addition to the Marathon a Month races (which see new runner Jan complete a number of races each month to make up the distance of 26.2 miles), Jan joined her sister Andrea in the recent Memory Walk in aid of this charity.

Local charity The Welcome Centre in Birkenhead, offering a place for carers of those with disabilities to come along and access the help and support they need, will also benefit from Jan’s charity running campaign and you can donate to both charities through Jan's page here.

Parkruns, Borders League 10K, Seaside Runs and the Liverpool & District Cross Country Union all featured in Jan’s running calendar in October but now the challenge gets more difficult. Fewer races are hosted in the coming months as the weather gets worse and people enter the busy Christmas period and then the hibernation month of January so Jan may need to travel further afield to complete her target over the winter. A highlight in the races on the horizon is the Liverpool Santa Dash in December where thousands of runners dressed as Santa adorn the Liverpool Streets and try to beat off competition for the number of Santas in other international cities doing the same. Please dig deep to support Jan and her chosen charities and help her through the dark, cold winter races!
