A marathon of races

September saw Jan McDermott smash her target 26.2 miles by clocking up 48 competitive miles in races across Merseyside and North Wales.

A new recruit to running last year and looking for a challenge to use this passion to support causes close to Jan’s heart, Jan set herself the challenge of running a ‘Marathon a Month’ for 12 months. The distance of a marathon (26.2 miles) would be made up of smaller races from 5K upwards to support the Alzheimers Society and Birkenhead’s Welcome Centre.

The Alzheimer’s Society funds research into the cause, care, cure and prevention of all types of dementia and has committed to spend at least £100 million on research over the next decade. The Welcome Centre in Birkenhead offers a place for carers of those with disabilities to come along and access the help and support they need.

In the last five months Jan has run over 30 races and has completed many ‘firsts’, such as a half marathon this month which she completed in just over 2 hours. In September an additional challenge was to complete two 5K races in one day (in a wig!) – the Scouse 5K and the Wirral seaside run. The remainder of the miles were made up of trail runs, a parkrun and the Wirral Multi terrain series of 4-5 mile races in Wirral’s parks.

Jan has also inspired other team members to enter races and co-director Rachel Wood did her first 10K race in September having built up to it by competing in parkruns.
